English Degree to Start at AUIS Fall 2012

Sulaimani, Iraq – Jan. 29, 2012 – Just days after announcing the addition of a mechanical engineering program, the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) today released information about another new degree program, the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in English, which will be offered beginning Fall 2012.  Students in this program can focus their coursework on a journalism and media concentration that will prepare them for two growing industries in the Middle East that rely heavily on elite English communication skills.  The university is also exploring the possibility of introducing additional concentrations within the major. “Globalization is a fact of modernity. And this region needs liberally educated individuals with journalism and media skills to break down the language barriers that isolate the Middle East from the non-Arabic and non-Kurdish speaking worlds,” said AUIS President, Dr. Athanasios Moulakis.  “Students in this program will receive the highest quality English education available in Iraq and leave AUIS prepared to fill critical jobs in local, regional, and international organizations.” The English degree program at AUIS will expand upon the University’s existing language and literature courses.  In the journalism and media track, students will study news writing, photojournalism, and audio journalism in preparation for careers in English-language media both in Iraq and abroad.  The skill sets that journalism and media require are highly sought after by Iraqi companies and international organizations.  Though the journalism classes will be taught exclusively in English by foreign professors with extensive experience with Western media outlets, the expertise students will acquire in the program can be applied to careers with publications of any language. Establishing an English program is one of many steps AUIS is undertaking to expand course offerings for undergraduate students.  While graduates from both the science and literary tracks may choose to major in English, this program will specifically appeal to students who graduated from the literary track of their high schools. The B.A. in English is designed to meet the standards of the Accreditation Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC), the United States’ premier communications accrediting agency. About American University of Iraq, Sulaimani AUIS is non-profit institution for public benefit offering a comprehensive, student-centered American-style education to all qualified students regardless of their background.  Since its establishment in 2006, AUIS has grown from a small university of 50 students into a large, vibrant community of more than 500 students from all corners of Iraq. AUIS accepts students based on their record of past academic performance and potential for success, regardless of affiliation or origin.
