How do I apply for a job at AUIS?
AUIS follows recruiting policies and procedures consistent with its commitment to diversity. What happens after I submit my application?
After the application is received, the Human Resources Department will review the information and references stated in the application. After the information is verified, the application will be forwarded to the relevant department (i.e. Communications Department, Information Technology Department). The director of the department will read each application and select the most qualified candidates for the position for an interview. If your application is selected, you will receive a telephone call or email to schedule an interview.

You will only hear from Human Resources if you are shortlisted for the position you have applied for.
What is the hiring process?
After applying online, if your qualifications align with AUIS needs, you will be contacted to move forward with the interview process.
How long after the above process will I hear back?
The review process normally takes approximately 4 weeks. If you do not hear from us within this time period your application is not being considered for this position. If you would like to be considered for another position, please reapply.
I have been offered a position. What happens now?
After an offer has been made, you will receive a contract via email along with any other pertinent materials. In the meantime, questions may be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
How long is the employment contract? What happens when the contract expires?
AUIS offers potential new hires two-year employment contracts. An employee may receive another contract depending on their previous job performance and necessity of the position.
Where is the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani located?
AUIS is located in Sulaimani. It's address is: Kirkuk Main Road, Raparin, Sulaimani Governorate, Kurdistan Region, Iraq.
There is a new travel advisory from the Department of State which “recommends against all but essential travel to the country.” Should I be concerned?
For a variety of reasons, the U.S. government includes the Kurdistan region in all reports related to Iraq. However, cooperation between the residents of Iraqi Kurdistan and the region’s security forces has kept the area safe, stable, and welcoming to expatriates.
Should a major occurrence happen, what is the exit strategy for expats?
The American Embassy, as well as all other Embassies, are aware of our presence and would act swiftly to evacuate citizens in the event of an emergency that would warrant a quick exit. Further, the university has an emergency preparedness plan. If you have specific concerns, a security advisor can address them.
How much military influence is there in Suli and are AUIS Expats guarded?
There is no U.S. military presence in Sulaimani. There are soldiers on duty on the perimeter of the AUIS campus and outside the two AUIS expat apartment complexes at all times.
How safe is Sulaimani?
The region’s well-trained, well-equipped security forces keep the area secure. Expat staff, faculty and family members should feel comfortable moving freely about the city. You will find that the residents of Sulaimani are welcoming and helpful. Read more about life in Sulaimani.
Do I need visa to Iraq and how can I get it?
New arrivals holding American or European passports do not require an entry visa to enter the Kurdistan Region at the airports in Sulaimani and Erbil. Arrivals holding other passports may require a visa prior to arriving in Sulaimani.
The Human Resources Department is responsible for obtaining an Iraqi visa; we will send the visa application once an employment contract is signed between AUIS and an employee. The visa process will take two to four weeks, though it may take longer in special cases.

Does AUIS provide housing for faculty and expatriate staff?
Yes, AUIS provides fully furnished apartments for faculty and expatriate staff.
Does AUIS provide relocation and shipping costs?
Once your contract has been signed, the Human Resources Department will work with you on all travel arrangements. AUIS will secure a plane ticket (or tickets if coming with spouse/family) from the new staff or faculty member’s residential address to Kurdistan. Each new staff or faculty member will be given a shipping allowance, to a maximum of $1,000, depending on their point of origin. At the end of the contract term, HR will secure passage to the employee’s residential address.
What is the cost of living in Kurdistan?
The cost of living in Kurdistan is very affordable. Food prices are varied; fruits and vegetables cost less than what you would pay in the U.S., while meat is about the same. Please note that you will not be paying for rent, utilities, or gasoline.
How hard is it to send/receive packages/letters from the US?
There are DHL and FedEx offices in Sulaimani. You can ship things from the United States via the US Postal Service. The expected delivery times are:
U.S. Post Office – 4 to 6 weeks
DHL/FedEx – 6 days, assuming there aren’t delays at the customs office.
What is the weather like in Sulaimani?
The city has a semi-arid climate with very hot and dry summers and cold, often rainy winters. Fall and spring weather is mild, with spring widely regarded as the most beautiful time of year. Read more.
If there were a medical emergency, what would happen?
Dr. Aso, the university’s liaison to the local community and government, will arrange emergency medical transport.
How reliable is the internet and phone service?
The internet is very good and Skype is a very reliable and inexpensive way to make calls. Cell phone service is inexpensive and all apartments have internet.
What is the AUIS policy on annual leave?
Annual leave is based on the academic calendar. The academic year begins in early September and ends in May (subject to change). This policy depends on whether an employee is a member of the faculty or staff.
When will I get paid and how do I get a copy of my pay slip?
Your monthly pay is usually distributed during the third week of the month. However, delay or earlier pay may occur as a result of major holidays. To get a copy of your pay slip, please contact the Human Resources Department at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Does the university provide health insurance for staff and faculty?
Staff and faculty receive exclusive health insurance coverage from AUIS. Once you have been offered a job, you should ask for copy of the health insurance coverage terms and conditions. The university is currently covered by Clemens International Scholarship Expat Insurance. AUIS will cover 75 percent of all costs, the balance being paid by the staff or faculty member. Spouse and Family coverage is also available at the same cost percentage. All coverage is subject to change.
