The AUIS Advantage

The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani prepares its students and graduates for success and leadership in a rapidly changing and global world.

Over 650 alumni flourish as professionals and graduate students in top schools and organizations in Iraq, United States and Europe.

The cadre of AUIS alumni are a distinct point of pride for the University. Renowned American author and journalist Thomas Friedman called AUIS “Iraq’s Best Hope” in his feature for the New York Times after his visit to the University as commencement speaker in May 2014.

AUIS GRADUATES ARE IN DEMAND

AUIS now has over 650 alumni, most of them working internationally and all over Iraq and its Kurdistan Region. The AUIS education makes these young men and women highly desirable employees in international relief organizations, multinational corporations, and local companies and businesses. AUIS graduates work primarily in the private sector, an exception in a region in which public sector employment still dominates career paths. According to a 2016 survey, more than 82 percent of AUIS’s undergraduate alumni are employed by the region’s top private companies or pursue advanced degrees at prestigious universities in the United States and Europe.

Alumni career success is supported by the AUIS Career Services Center, which has expanded its operations over the years to offer resume, cover letter, and interview training, and has established relationships with most companies operating in Iraq and its Kurdistan Region. The Center holds an annual career fair that is attended by dozens of leading corporations, multinationals and NGOs seeking to hire new talent from the region.

According to a 2016 survey conducted by the Career Service Center of 57 alumni, 69 percent of AUIS graduates have full-time employment across Iraq and the region and are working in cities from Erbil, to Baghdad, to Beirut and beyond; three percent are employed part time and 10 percent are enrolled in graduate studies in the U.S., Europe and Iraq.

According to the latest AUIS survey, graduates’ wages average US $1,771 per month, which is a five percent increase from the average salaray reported in 2015 ($1,676.8) despite the financial crisis in the region.
